6th Grade mathematics The North Carolina Standard Course of Study provides five goals in which every sixth graders will learn mathematics through each objective for the curriculum and objectives.NCSCOS -6th Grade Math
Goal 1: Rational Numbers Rational Numbers Chart oStudents will develop a sense of negative rational numbers. oStudents will estimate the meaning for percents. oCompare and order rational numbers. oStudents will develop a fluency in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of non-negative rational numbers. oDevelop a fluency in the use of factors, multiples, exponential notation, and prime factorization. oStudents will use exponential and scientific notation to write large and small numbers. oDevelop flexibility in solving problems using mental computation, estimation, calculators, and computers. Goal 2: Two and Three Dimensional Figures Volumes and Areas oMeasure length, perimeter, area, angles, weight, and mass. oSolve problems involving perimeter and circumference and are of plane figures.
Goal 3: Properties and Relationships of Geometric Figures in the Coordinate Plane Human Coordinate Plane oStudents will identify and describe the intersection of figures. oIdentify the radius, diameter, chord, center, and circumference of a circle. oTransform figures in a plane and describe transformation. oStudents will solve problems involving geometric figures in a coordinate plane.
Goal 4: Probabilities Probability Quizzes oDevelop fluency with counting strategies to determine sample space for an event. oStudents will determine the probability of an event. oConduct experiments involving simple and compound events. oDetermine and compare experimental and theoretical probabilities for simple, compound, independent, and dependent events. oStudents will design and conduct experiments to solve problems.
Goal 5: Simple Algebraic Expressions Word Problems oStudents will obtain simple algebraic expressions using basic properties such as identity, commutative, associative, distributive, and order of operations. oUse and Evaluate algebraic expressions. oSolve simple one and two step equations and inequalities. oStudents will use graphs, tables, and symbols to solve problems involving rates of change and ratios.
